“Your ability to hold your biggest dreams expands only as much as your ability to hold your deepest discomforts. Growth doesn’t have to be dramatic — it happens through consistent conversations and the steady momentum of what keeps you showing up.”
“I'm somebody who…battles with depression and…I feel like the excitement of life is kind of something that I'm feeling again more consistently…which is really encouraging.”
-Stephanie
“I started out with just trying to follow the calories…which is good, and I love that but what I really like about what we're doing is that it's actually helping me to be more aware of myself and why I do things. I'm even actually losing weight steadily without working so hard at it because I feel good…”
-Hollie
“I've been really happy...I'm just so relaxed...it's a state of mind that I'm in. I'm not stressing out and every conversation, every interaction I'm having...I walk into it with confidence, and I leave with confidence. I don't remember the last time I did any of that.”
-Alicia
Reweaving the threads…
You may have heard the saying that the biggest obstacle between us and our goals is often ourselves. It can feel frustrating when it seems like our very being is made up of smaller characters with completely opposing ideas—leaving us conflicted to the point of paralysis.
But what if that idea were true? Internal Family Systems (IFS), a psychotherapy model created by Richard Schwartz and one that informs my work, is based on the theory that we all have subpersonalities—much like the characters in the movie Inside Out. He calls these subpersonalities our “parts.”
Now imagine if those parts, instead of being locked in constant conflict, could work together in harmony. Could you picture your life falling into greater alignment as you relate to yourself with less frustration and more compassion?
The Role of the Body
Somatic Experiencing —a therapeutic approach I am currently training in—supports this process by attuning to the body —the place where our nervous system stores and shapes automatic responses.
Although our intellectual mind is often in the driver’s seat, the truth is we are stronger when we enlist the full potential of all our parts. Even the parts we perceive as problematic are often carrying trauma stories—overwhelming experiences that our nervous systems reacted to faster than our minds could process. Without the resources to “file them away neatly,” these memories become places we avoid. Left unaddressed, they resurface in powerful ways such as uncontrollable emotions or cycles of behaviors we struggle to break. The result is often a misunderstanding of our parts and their intentions—leading to inner conflict.
Somatic Experiencing offers a safe way to gently untangle these stories. By slowing down and staying present with emotions and their associated bodily sensations as they rise—we expand our capacity to witness our truths, even when it’s hard.
Reweaving Your Narrative
The outcome is a transformation: taking untangled threads and reweaving them into something harmonious, cohesive, and stronger than before.
